Applying for the Program
Selection of Residents
Selection of residents in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is based on academic records, letters of recommendation, and interviews. Selection is made without regard to race, religion, gender, national origin, marital or veteran status, age or disability.
Medical Licensure
All residents at the University of Mississippi Medical Center must obtain a Mississippi medical license.
Applicants must meet the licensure requirements established by the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure. USMLE Steps 1 and 2, or equivalent COMLEX-USA examinations, are required before a restricted temporary license may be issued. Step 3 of the USMLE, or the equivalent COMLEX-USA Level 3 examination, is required for eligibility for a permanent Mississippi medical license.
The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure may issue a restricted temporary license to physicians who otherwise meet the requirements for licensure but have not yet completed the postgraduate training requirements and/or passed Step 3 or its equivalent. The restricted temporary license permits practice within an approved postgraduate training program.
International Medical Graduates
Applicants who are not United States citizens must have a J-1 visa or Permanent Resident Card to be employed as a resident at UMMC.
International medical graduates must have a current, valid ECFMG Certificate to begin residency training.
Background Check
Trainees must also complete fingerprinting and a background investigation. The background investigation may include previous employment, professional licensing and certifications, and criminal history.
